Benfica is interested in signing Mason Greenwood after club executives recently met with the 22-year-old forward and his family in Madrid to discuss a potential move.
Greenwood had a successful season at Getafe in La Liga after joining on loan from Manchester United last summer.
Initially, there were plans to bring Greenwood back to Manchester United after legal issues were resolved, but a leaked report from The Athletic caused a change in plans. Ultimately, a loan move abroad was agreed upon to allow Greenwood to continue his playing career.
Several clubs showed interest, but ultimately, Getafe secured a last-minute deal to bring Greenwood on loan to Spain for a year.
Greenwood had an impressive season, scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists in 36 games. He was honored with the Player of the Season award at Getafe, with the club’s President expressing his desire for Greenwood to stay in Madrid for another year.
His performances caught the attention of clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus, among others.
Recent reports from Record suggest that Benfica’s Sporting Director met with Greenwood and his representatives to discuss the club’s interest in signing him.
Benfica and United have previous dealings, with the recent transfer of Alvaro Fernandez Carreras from Manchester to Lisbon. United is also reportedly targeting Joao Neves from Benfica, with negotiations ongoing.
A potential swap deal involving Greenwood and Neves has been speculated, but Benfica is not interested in such an arrangement according to Record.
