Sabalenka to Face Zheng for Australian Open Title

Australian Open—Melbourne, Australia

World No. 2 and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the finals of the Australian Open on Thursday, defeating reigning US Open winner Coco Gauff 7-6(2), 6-4.

In a match that lasted one hour and 42 minutes, Sabalenka served five aces and hit 33 winners.

Improving to 3-4 against Gauff in lifetime meetings, Sabalenka will next face No. 12 seed Qinwen Zheng for the title on Saturday.

Zheng overcame the fairytale run of qualifier Dayana Yastremska in straight sets to advance.

Appearing in her first Major final, Zheng has quickly become one of the most popular players on Tour.

Losing to Sabalenka in the quarterfinals of last year’s US Open, Zheng will be ready to prove that her level of play has improved since last Summer.

Friday’s schedule of play in Melbourne will feature top seed Novak Djokovic taking on No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev facing No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic holds a 4-2 head-to-head lead over Sinner, while Medvedev has a 11-7 series lead over Zverev.

Get ready for the 2024 Tennis season today, with great tickets to the Australian Open in Melbourne.
