Sabalenka Triumphs Over Svitolina, Advances to Fourth Australian Open Final

Aryna Sabalenka continued her impressive performance at the Australian Open, securing her place in the final for the fourth consecutive year. The world number one displayed dominant tennis as she overcame Elina Svitolina with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals held on Thursday night. With this victory, Sabalenka is now just one win away from claiming her third title at the Australian Open in four years.

In the championship match, Sabalenka will face fifth seed Elena Rybakina, who also had a strong showing in her semifinal, defeating sixth seed Jessica Pegula 6-3, 7-6(7). Rybakina previously won Wimbledon in 2022 and was the runner-up to Sabalenka in last year’s Australian Open final.

All four semifinalists reached this stage without conceding a single set, marking a rare achievement in Australian Open history. Both Sabalenka and Svitolina entered the match with impressive ten-match winning streaks, having claimed titles in their respective warm-up tournaments.

Sabalenka’s match was characterized by her powerful hitting, accumulating 29 winners compared to Svitolina’s 12. She broke her opponent’s serve twice in the first set, establishing control early on. Despite a brief interruption in the fourth game due to a hindrance call against Sabalenka — which stemmed from a prolonged grunt during a point — she quickly regained her momentum and proceeded to dominate the match.

Reflecting on the situation, Sabalenka found motivation from the call, transforming any frustration into aggressive play. “It actually helped me. I was more aggressive. I was not happy with the call, and it really helped me to get that game,” she noted, lightheartedly inviting future calls that might similarly fuel her performance.

Svitolina managed one service break at the onset of the second set but could not maintain her momentum, losing the next five games as Sabalenka took control.

This semifinal marked a significant milestone for Svitolina, as she returned to the top 10 in the rankings for the first time since taking a maternity leave in 2022. After achieving her first title since her comeback in a warm-up tournament in Auckland, Svitolina expressed mixed emotions about her semifinal exit, acknowledging the difficulty of facing a dominant player like Sabalenka.

“It was really complicated for me today,” Svitolina admitted, emphasizing her intent to glean positive experiences from the recent tournaments to carry forward into the upcoming season. Despite her disappointment, her recent performances indicate a promising return to form.

As the stage is set for the final, all eyes will be on Sabalenka as she aims to cement her legacy with another Australian Open title against a formidable opponent in Rybakina.
