Sakkari To Start Working With Pegula’s Former Coach Month After ‘Surprising’ Split

Sakkari To Start Working With Pegula’s Former Coach Month After ‘Surprising’ Split

Jessica Pegula recently split with her longtime coach, David Witt, and he’ll now start working with Maria Sakkari.

The Greek player’s tennis career has been a very fascinating but also strange case of brilliance, but not enough. It might sound confusing but Sakkari has been one of the better players on the WTA Tour in recent years and yet she doens’t really have much to show off.

Winning trophies has always been a huge problem for her, as she barely makes it to finals. She often makes it to the semi-finals of events but often just lacks something to go all the way.

Her biggest trophy came last year at the Guadalajara Open which was a huge moment for her but she hasn’t been able to build up much momentum after that. Before that, she hasn’t won a trophy bigger than a WTA 250 tournament.

The potential is there but something is seemingly missing and that could be a new coach. Now, she has one, as she hired David Witt just a month after he parted ways with longtime protege Jessica Pegula.

Witt did wonders with Pegula, transforming her into one of the most consistent tennis players on Tour. She also became one of the best players on the Tour under him to this partnership makes a lot of sense.

He could be exactly what Sakkari needs to take her game to the next level. It’s been somewhat of a struggle in recent times, and she needs something new, which may have been a reason for her split with coach Tom Hill.

Witt has a reputation of being a tremendous coach so we should certainly see some improvements under him but ultimately the results will speak the loudest.

The first event for them together should be the Indian Wells Open, an event where Sakkari played very well in the past, reaching the final in 2022 and the semi-final last year.
