Welcome back to Top of the Order!
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I’ll be starting your baseball day with news, notes, and thoughts about the game we love. Today, let’s talk about the struggling San Francisco Giants.
Connor Grossman highlighted in his Substack newsletter that the Giants have a dismal record of 1-20 in games where they give up four or more runs. When compared to other teams, the Giants are among the worst in such situations, winning just over 25% of the time when giving up four runs.
San Francisco had high hopes for the season, but their performance so far has been disappointing. The main issue seems to be their inability to score enough runs when needed. Even with a decent offensive lineup, the Giants are struggling to capitalize on opportunities.
One bright spot has been the Brewers’ Rhys Hoskins, who is making a strong comeback after missing last season due to ACL surgery. His selective hitting and improved contact rates are standing out this season, despite some limitations in running ability.
In other news, the Cubs ended their streak of scoreless starts with a win over the Padres, while the Yankees had a big win over the Astros, highlighted by Giancarlo Stanton’s massive home run off Justin Verlander.
