Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticized his former side following a disappointing 0-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.
Hopes were high before the match after a lackluster draw against FC Twente in their Europa League opener, but those hopes were quickly dashed as Brennan Johnson scored an early goal for the visitors within four minutes.
Manchester United continued to struggle as they were repeatedly exposed and lost their captain to a questionable red card just before halftime.
Despite a slightly improved performance in the second half, it was not enough as United conceded two more goals, with the game potentially ending with an even larger goal differential.
In an interview with Premier League Productions after the match, Scholes criticized Erik ten Hag’s coaching of the United players, stating, “they look uncoached, some of the positions they take, Ugarte, for example, must be difficult for a new player. He’s sometimes on the right or popping up on the left.”
The 49-year-old also expressed disappointment in the players’ lack of effort, claiming, “the players looked dead today, they looked flat. They don’t know what they want. It’s just madness the positions they sometimes take on the pitch. That’s where Man Utd are, and it’s difficult to watch.”
Scholes highlighted how easily opposing teams are able to control play at Old Trafford, as United suffered their second consecutive three-goal defeat at home in the league.
“Teams have come to Old Trafford and looked better coached and today was no different.”
Scholes’ remarks add to the growing criticism of Ten Hag and his ability to manage the team.
Robbie Savage suggested that Ten Hag’s position is at risk following the uninspiring performance, while Gary Neville described the display as “one of the very worst” under the Dutchman’s tenure.
Manchester United have upcoming crucial matches against FC Porto in the Europa League and Aston Villa in the Premier League before the next international break.
The uncertainty remains whether Ten Hag will continue as manager after these games following another dismal showing from his team.
