On the scorecards, TPC River Highlands measures 6,835 yards, but the PGA Tour never plays every hole to its maximum length on the same day, so it always plays shorter than that number. In the second round, it is played to 6,817 yards, making it one of the shortest courses PGA Tour pros will see all season.
Yes, the rough is thick in some areas, and there are runoffs around some of the greens, but the host course of the Travelers Championship yields low scores and on Friday, the scoring average of 67.97 was the lowest ever in a second round in tournament history. The previous lowest field scoring average for a second round had been established in 2011 when the average was 68.18. Contributing to that low scoring average were Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre, who each carded 62, Morikawa, Thomas and Tom Hoge who each shot 63 and five players who shot 64.
With rain on Friday evening sorting the course and the chance of more rain falling overnight and on Saturday, scoring conditions should remain good, so Keegan Bradley’s all-time low winning score of 257 (23 under), established last year, might be within reach.
