Scottie Scheffler’s decision to switch to the TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck putter proves successful

Scottie Scheffler’s switch to TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-Neck paid off

Scottie Scheffler hit his breaking point after a solid finish at the WM Phoenix, shooting 68-66-66-66 to tie for third. Despite his performance, he struggled as one of the worst putters in the field who made the cut during the West Coast Swing. While still holding the No. 1 spot in the world, he had accumulated four top-10 finishes in five PGA Tour starts without a win.

Prior to the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler made a shift from a heel-toe weighted blade putter to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X with a unique L-shaped hosel. Following this change, Scheffler dominated, winning not only at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but also at the Players Championship and the Masters in subsequent weeks.

The TaylorMade Spider putters feature a gunmetal finish, aluminum wireframe body, True Path alignment system, and a vibration-dampening system to enhance performance. Scheffler’s Spider Tour X L-Neck putter has a hosel that creates ideal balance for his slightly arced putting stroke.

Equipped with a Pure Roll insert made with Surlyn, the putter boasts grooves that facilitate a forward roll upon impact. With specific specifications such as 3 degrees of loft, a 72-degree lie angle, and a 35.5-inch length, Scheffler found success with this putter, securing multiple victories on the Tour.

In July, TaylorMade made Scheffler’s winning putter available to the public for purchase.

How does Scottie Scheffler’s 2024 putting compare to previous seasons?

Previous seasons saw Scottie Scheffler struggle with putting compared to his other golfing skills. While his 2023 performance was subpar in putting, the shift to the TaylorMade Spider Tour L-Neck in 2024 resulted in improved rankings and overall consistency on the greens.

Reflecting on his decision to switch to a mallet putter, Scheffler explained:

“I had tried a different Spider during the playoffs last year. It was different from the one I used last week [the Spider X Tour L-Neck]. I struggled with alignment and strikes with my previous putter, but the Spider putter’s design helped me focus better and achieve better results.”
