In a challenging turn of events at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, both Alex de Minaur and Felix Auger-Aliassime saw their paths to the Nitto ATP Finals obstructed as they exited the tournament during the quarterfinals.
Australian de Minaur faced a formidable opponent in Daniil Medvedev, ultimately succumbing to a straight-sets defeat, with a final score of 6-4, 6-4. This match presented a significant opportunity for the 26-year-old to bolster his position in the ATP Finals race, where he aimed to ascend to as high as No. 5. Despite the loss, de Minaur managed to retain his No. 7 ranking, maintaining a narrow lead over contenders such as Lorenzo Musetti and Casper Ruud in the race to Turin.
On the other hand, Auger-Aliassime’s aspirations were similarly dashed when he was ousted by Arthur Rinderknech, who emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. The 25-year-old Canadian, currently sitting at 10th place in the race, recognizes the gravity of his situation. He acknowledges the urgent need for a strong finish to the season, potentially requiring him to achieve multiple noteworthy results in 2025 to secure his spot in the prestigious tournament.
Before the Shanghai event commenced, Auger-Aliassime expressed his determination to qualify for the ATP Finals, highlighting the contrasting phases of his season. “I’ve faced some ups and downs,” he stated. “However, after a strong start and a successful summer in the U.S., I’m motivated to make a last push to ensure I qualify for Turin. I know that I have to step up my game and secure some wins to push competing players out of the race.”
In terms of performance, Auger-Aliassime’s season is marked by reaching the semifinals at the U.S. Open this past summer. Meanwhile, de Minaur’s consistent efforts have been evident, as he boasts a record of 50-19 in 2025 and has reached the quarterfinals or better in at least 10 tournaments throughout the year. As the season progresses, both players will need to recalibrate and find ways to capitalize on upcoming opportunities to enhance their chances for a place at the ATP Finals.
