Denis Shapovalov‘s career is still not back on track as the Canadian withdrew from the upcoming Davis Cup Qualifiers.
It’s been pretty rough going for the Canadian in recent months, because he can’t compete as he used to. Anytime you see a tennis player who is not playing tennis, you can be assured that that tennis player is not particularly happy.
Shapovalov talked about his injuries a few times, admitting how hard it’s been to be away from the sport. He did return at the Australian Open but lost in the opening round and didn’t really look all that good.
Was he healthy enough to play? That’s tough to say because there is a good chance he wasn’t. The recent development certainly boosts that view because Shapovalov has now withdrawn from the upcoming Davis Cup qualifiers being replaced by Milos Raonic.
Shapovalov released a statement about his withdrawal. He explained that his withdrawal comes because he wants to prioritise finding his rhythm again.
“Representing Canada has and always will be a priority of mine, and I have so many great Davis Cup memories in my career already. However, having missed a substantial amount of time last season with an injury.”
We’ll see what happens with Shapovalov moving forward and what his next event will be. The Canadian has not hinted at anything particular, though it could be some of the indoor tournaments in Europe or the Sunshine Double, the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, in North America.
“I am now at the beginning of my comeback and need to focus on finding my rhythm again and making sure that I can get back to my best level as fast as possible. Best of luck to the team. I know the guys have what it takes to get us through to the group stage.”
