Nottingham Forest Parts Ways with Ange Postecoglou After Chelsea Defeat
Nottingham Forest has decided to relieve Ange Postecoglou of his duties as head coach, just 39 days after his appointment on September 9. This decision came shortly after the team’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.
Owner Evangelos Marinakis departed his seat during the match and an official statement regarding Postecoglou’s future was issued 19 minutes post-match.
Under Postecoglou’s leadership, Forest did not secure a single win in eight attempts. His tenure ended with four consecutive defeats across all competitions, and as he left the pitch, fans expressed their dissatisfaction with audible boos, completely unaware that his time was coming to an end.
Postecoglou, 60, had defended his record in a press conference the previous Friday, claiming that given time, “the story always ends the same … me with a trophy.” However, Marinakis opted for a different outcome.
“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect,” the club announced.
This marks one of the shortest managerial stints in Premier League history. Sam Allardyce currently holds the record for the shortest tenure, having managed Leeds United for just 30 days in 2023. Les Reed follows in third, having been sacked 40 days after taking charge at Charlton in 2006.
Postecoglou took over from Nuno Espírito Santo, who was dismissed following reported disagreements with Edu Gaspar, Forest’s head of global football. The former Celtic manager was expected to implement a more attacking style but struggled amid lingering support for his predecessor.
This is not the first time Postecoglou has faced dismissal in recent months, having also been let go by Tottenham Hotspur despite leading them to a Europa League title, marking the club’s first trophy in 17 years.
At the time of his departure, Forest was positioned 17th in the Premier League, just above the relegation zone.
