Postecoglou Dismissed by Nottingham Forest After Brief Tenure
Nottingham Forest made the decision to relieve Ange Postecoglou of his duties after just 39 days at the helm, which included five Premier League matches. His departure follows a disappointing 3-0 loss at home to Chelsea.
Club owner Evangelos Marinakis acted swiftly, announcing Postecoglou’s sacking merely 19 minutes after the final whistle at the City Ground. Postecoglou’s stint, which began on September 9, now places him among the ten permanent managers in Premier League history to last fewer than 100 days.
Here’s a look at other managers who faced early dismissals during their reigns:
Nathan Jones, Southampton – 84 days
Nathan Jones took charge of Southampton in November 2022, following Ralph Hasenhuttl. His time with the club was marked by nine defeats in 14 matches, prompting the search for a third manager of the season.
Quique Sánchez Flores, Watford – 85 days
Watford’s managerial changes have been frequent under the Pozzo family’s ownership. Sánchez Flores had two separate terms with the club, his second only lasting 12 matches with merely two wins.
Bob Bradley, Swansea City – 85 days
The first American to coach in the Premier League, Bradley oversaw Swansea City from October to December 2016, securing only eight points from 11 matches before being dismissed.
Frank De Boer, Crystal Palace – 77 days
De Boer was in charge of Crystal Palace for just four league games at the beginning of the 2017-18 season, making him the shortest-serving permanent manager in Premier League history without earning a point or scoring a goal.
Rene Meulensteen, Fulham – 75 days
Meulensteen replaced Martin Jol in December 2013 but struggled to improve Fulham’s fortunes, finishing the season with the club at the bottom of the table after losing nine of his 13 matches.
Javi Gracia, Leeds United – 69 days
Gracia faced an uphill battle after taking over Leeds United following Jesse Marsch’s dismissal during the turbulent 2022-23 campaign. His time ended after 12 matches, with three victories and seven losses.
Les Reed, Charlton Athletic – 40 days
After taking over Charlton in 2006, Reed was unable to secure a turnaround, achieving only four points in seven matches before his release on Christmas Eve.
Sam Allardyce, Leeds United – 30 days
Allardyce’s tenure at Leeds United in 2023 marked his eighth Premier League club. Although Leeds was above the relegation zone when he took over, he managed only one point in four matches, resulting in the shortest management spell in Premier League history.
