Lisa Short’s history of never backing down from a challenge is admirable, inspiring, and sometimes hard to believe.
Short picked up golf only six years ago on the insistence of her son, Madison. Remarkably, Short was recovering from rare triple negative breast cancer and a subsequent year of chemotherapy and radiation.
“He got me off the sofa and walking our par-3 in our neighborhood, and that’s how the obsession began,” said Short, 62, of Atlanta, who played in her first USGA championship this week at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur at Broadmoor Country Club in Seattle, Washington. She shot 81-84 and missed the cut for match play by four strokes.

Short, who previously played professional tennis and ran Iron Man and triathlon competitions, said the three different types of chemo caused neuropathy in her hands and feet.
