
(September 8, 2024) FLUSHING, NY – No.1 Jannick Sinner won his first US Open by beating No. 12 Taylor Fritz for his second major title on Sunday afternoon 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. He is the first Italian man to win the US Open. He joins his compatriot Flavia Pennetta who is the only Italian woman to win the US Open when she did it in 2015.
Fritz had become the first American man to reach a major final since Andy Roddick at 2009 Wimbledon and US Open final since Roddick in 2006.
Sinner is the youngest man to win both hard court major titles in a single season, after winning Australian Open in January. He joins Novak Djokovic (2011, 2015, 2023), Roger Federer (2004, 2006-07) and Mats Wilander (1988) in this exclusive club.
He is also the first man since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win his first two major finals in the same year.
Sinner is currently on a 11-match winning streak dating back to the Cincinnati Open.
He is the eleventh different US Open men’s singles champion since 2008. No man has repeated since Roger Federer.
He has become the first World No. 1 player to win men’s singles title since No. 1 Rafael Nadal won the US Open in 2017.
Sinner now leads the ATP Tour in titles this year with six.
The Italian broke serve to open the match to take a 1-0 lead, Sinner saves break points in the fourth game, but Fritz returned the favor to level the set at 2-2. Sinner saved break points in the fifth game and again broke Fritz to take a 4-3 lead. Sinner wins the last four straight games to take the first set 6-3 in 41 minutes. Sinner was 3 for 7 in break point opportunities in the set while Fritz got only 38% of his first serves in.
In the second set both men were steady and holding serves with ease until the tenth game when sinner broke serve at 15 to take a 6-3, 6-4 lead in 75 minutes.
Sinner opened the third set digging out of love-40 to hold for 1-0. Fritz fought off two break points in the sixth game for 3-3. Fritz broke serve to take a 4-3 lead, with the crowd roaring, lifting up the American.
Fritz serving for the set at 5-4, was broken at 30 and the set went to 5-5. Sinner held for 6-5, and broke the American to end the match 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
Earning his 23rd match win at major events this year, his 23+ wins means he joins the company of Djokovic (6 times), Federer (6 times), Nadal (5 times), Andy Murray (2016), Andre Agassi (1999), Pete Sampras (1993), Mats Wilander (1988), Ivan Lendl (1987) and Rod Laver (1969).
He is now the fifth active male player to win multiple majors titles after Djokovic (24), Nadal (22), Carlos Alcaraz (4) and Wawrinka (3).
This is the third time in Open Era all 4 major titles have been won by players aged 23-and-under – Sinner Australian Open and US Open (23) and Carlos Alcaraz (21) Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
