Jannik Sinner‘s hip injury has been the focus of his 2024 Madrid Open campaign, potentially leading to his withdrawal from the tournament.
The top-seeded Italian player, competing at an ATP Masters 1000 level for the first time, has navigated his matches successfully. Despite winning easily in the first two rounds and overcoming Karen Khachanov, concerns about his hip arose during his matches.
Sinner encountered discomfort in his hip area during his match against Pavel Kotov, impacting his performance in subsequent matches. He received treatment late into the night to be fit for the matches, including his victory against Khachanov.
Following his win, Sinner expressed uncertainty about participating in the quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime, depending on his physical condition.
“I decided to play today after warming up. Yesterday I went to bed late working with my physio to get ready. It was a long night. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow after playing more than two hours today. If it gets worse, I’ll think about it (being in the quarterfinals). If I can, I will play, if not, I won’t. Tomorrow I will decide.”
Post the Madrid Open, Sinner will compete in the Italian Open, a crucial tournament for him considering it’s the only ATP Masters 1000 event in Italy. Prioritizing his health for subsequent tournaments, like the French Open, may influence his decision regarding the quarter-final match in Madrid.
