Jannik Sinner has been the best tennis player in the world in 2024, and he proved it once again against Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open.
Despite being around the Top 10 on the ATP Tour for a couple of years, it took the young Italian some time, at least compared to Carlos Alcaraz, before he established himself as title challenger at any tournament he enters.
Sinner showed glimpses of greatness already in the last months of the 2023 season, and he started 2024 with the biggest success of his career, winning the Australian Open in Melbourne.
In the final match of the tournament, he played against Medvedev, who had a two-set lead, before the 22-year-old completed a comeback, which sealed him his maiden major title.
Ahead of their clash in Miami, Sinner reminded everyone that he was down 0-2 in that final, and that he can’t afford to do the same in Miami, as that would mean a loss in the best-of-three format.
Fortunately for the world no. 2, he didn’t get anywhere close to that, as he controlled the match from the first point to the last. The only time Medvedev led in the match was when he had a 30-15 lead on Sinner’s first serve, and from there, it was all about the Italian.
He held his first service game, broke immediately after that, and added one more break for good measure, looking at a bagel at 5-0, with the Russian player serving. The former world no. 1 managed to decrease the deficit to 1-5, before his opponent won the first set 6-1.
Sinner ended the opening set on a four-point streak, and since he started the second set by winning six consecutive points, he made it ten points in a row, getting another break and leading 2-0 in the second set.
But Medvedev is a chess master on the tennis court, and he tried to come up with strategies and tactics to overcome his opponent’s incredible play.
However, even though Sinner faced a break point in the fourth game, he saved it with a couple of powerful forehands. He added two aces after that, completely ending Medvedev’s momentum, and the Russian wasn’t able to ever get back into the match.
Sinner was just unplayable, and the result only proves that, as he was able to win the match 6-1, 6-2 to reach his third Miami Open final. On the previous two occasions, he lost, and this time around, he will play against the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov.
