Sinner Explains How He Managed To Save Three Match Points Against Djokovic And Win

Jannik Sinner did something that no one else managed to do before when he beat Novak Djokovic after saving three consecutive match points.

The Italian is having probably the best weeks of his career. First, he managed to beat Djokovic at the ATP Finals before losing to him in the final of the ATP year-end championship.

However, only a few days later, the two met again, this time at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, and once again, it was the Italian player who won the match, to keep Italy alive.

Then, he dressed up for doubles, teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego, and once again, managed to beat Serbia’s Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic to secure the country’s spot in the final.

However, the most important moment came probably in the singles match, when Sinner saved three consecutive match points and went on to beat Djokovic after that, something that no one else managed to do before.

After the doubles win, the Italian talked to the press in Malaga, and explained how he managed to do it. According to Sinner, the fact that he had almost new balls was very important.

“I know that it was a really important, obviously important game. We changed, not for so long, for new balls, so I knew if I’m going to serve well that maybe I have some free points.”

On top of that, he tried to stay in the present moment, not thinking about three match points that he had to save, but approach it as only the next rally. In the end, the approach proved to be victorious.

“But I had to stay in the present moment. It was Love-40, and he missed a quite easy backhand, which gave me a little bit of confidence and belief. And then after, I served twice really good. And nothing. You know, after these kind of games, your energy level and mental level, it’s raising. I think this helped me today.”
