Jannik Sinner did really well in his first match at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, but he wants to play even better.
The Italian is very likely the best player in the world right now. He lost only one match in 2024, and apart from that, he won three titles: one Grand Slam, one ATP Masters 1000, and one ATP 500.
Sinner won all of those on the hard courts, but now, it’s time to switch to the clay as the buildup towards the Roland Garros began. In his first match on the red dirt, he completely outplayed Sebastian Korda, dropping only three games against the American.
Already before traveling to Monaco, the reigning Australian Open champion discussed that it might be difficult for him to change to clay this year, as he won the Miami Open trophy only a couple of weeks ago, and now he already has a match on clay in his pocket.
That’s why after the match, the Italian discussed the switch to the slow surface, and he admitted that being stronger physically helped him, as well as growing in confidence, thanks to his incredible season.
“I think it’s, I won’t say easier, but for sure the physicality, I have grown, and especially on this surface can help a lot. If you feel more confident, then stronger physically.”
Still, that’s not enough for Sinner, who wants to be even better. Up next, he will play against Jan-Lennard Struff, who can trouble any opponent, but the Italian just seems to be on another planet right now.
“I wouldn’t say that it was easier, but I got a little bit faster to the point where I would like to be. For sure I’m not where I want to be, but for sure we are trying to build on, in the next days and in the next weeks, trying to feel more comfortable.”
