Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw from his quarterfinal match in the Mutua Madrid Open against Felix Auger-Alissime due to a right-hip injury that had been bothering him throughout the tournament.

“Very sad to have to withdraw from my next match here in Madrid,” Sinner shared on Instagram. “My hip has been bothering me this week and has slowly been getting more painful. Taking the advice from the doctors we decided it’s best to not play further and make it worse.”

“I’ll be doing some more tests in the coming days and follow the advice from the specialists on recovery. Thank you guys for all your support.”

The 22-year-old Italian is expected to have his hip evaluated in Monte-Carlo before heading to Rome for the next clay-court Masters 1000 event in front of his home crowd. Following tournaments in Rome, Geneva, and Lyon, Sinner will look to compete in the French Open starting on May 26.

Sinner, with a record of 28-2 this season, has climbed to second in the rankings. If he can recover from his injury, he stands a good chance of reaching the No. 1 spot in the world rankings for the first time following the French Open.
