Jannik Sinner has some specific goals for the Indian Wells Open, but overtaking Carlos Alcaraz isn’t really one of them.
The Italian arrived in California after a tremendous start to the year. He won the Australian Open trophy and added another one in Rotterdam while remaining undefeated in twelve matches.
A form like that certainly puts him in the upper bracket of favorites for the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the year. Of course, he wants to win it, but the goal is more long-term.
Sinner is determined to improve as a player because that’s ultimately what will help him achieve other goals. The better he plays, the more likely he’ll be to win more victories in the future.
Being number one is also a goal, but it’s not the goal. He’s number three right now, with a chance to become number two. Despite the chance, Sinner isn’t really thinking about it too much. As he explained to the media, it’s secondary for him.
“Number 2? I always say that the ranking is a secondary thing. First, to get there I have to have a very continuous season, which does not mean winning every tournament, but being ready to compete. In Rotterdam, we knew there was a chance to become number 3. Here, it’s the same thing to become number 2, but it doesn’t just depend on me.”
Sinner begins his campaign against Thanasi Kokkinakis, and he’s taking it one match at a time, not focusing on his opponents, and that showed after his Rotterdam Open triumph, as he immediately got back to work.
“There are other factors, other players and there is Nole who comes back here after a long time. After Rotterdam we got straight to work… that’s the key that led me to this success, but I know I have to improve. Even now we’ve done a good job and I hope I can show it on the court.”
