Jannik Sinner is currently ranked 4th on the ATP Rankings, but he will be ranked third either the coming Monday or the week after that.
The Italian was never part of the Top 3 of the ATP Rankings, but he will be in the coming days. The Italian always underlined the need to work harder and patiently wait for things to fall into place, and that is exactly what has been happening over the past six months.
He won his maiden ATP 1000 trophy during the summer, jumping to number 6 in the rankings. Solid performances at the end of September saw him rise to number 4 in the rankings, the first time he put himself in the Top 5.
The point total has changed dramatically since then, but the ranking hasn’t changed. He has about 3000 more points, but even after winning the Australian Open, Sinner remained fourth.
The reason for his improvement will be his good performance, but also the fact that Daniil Medvedev has not played. After losing to Sinner in the Australian Open final, Medvedev has yet to play a match.
He won Rotterdam last year but withdrew this year, which will cause him to drop a good number of points (500). Sinner, on the other hand, defended his 330 points from the final of this event and had a chance to overtake Medvedev with a win.
Live ATP Rankings (pre Rotterdam Open final):
3. Daniil Medvedev | 8265 |
4. Jannik Sinner | 8100 |
If Sinner wins the event, he’ll get 170 more points, which would put him at 8270 and ahead of Medvedev. He would only overtake him by 5 points, but that would be good enough for him to find himself ahead of the Russian.
ATP Rankings (If Sinner wins Rotterdam)
3. Jannik Sinner | 8270 |
4. Daniil Medvedev | 8265 |
If Sinner loses to Alex de Minaur in the final, the Italian would still become world number 3 after the next week. The Russian withdrew from the Qatar Open next week even though he won that event as well last year, so he’s dropping those points, putting his total to 8015 points, making it impossible for Sinner to stay fourth regardless of the Rotterdam Open final result.
