Sinner to Face Sonego in Exciting Clash at 2024 Madrid Open

Jannik Sinner will face compatriot Lorenzo Sonego at the 2024 Madrid Open, with both aiming to win this all-Italian derby.

The last time Sinner stood on a tennis court was in Monte Carlo around two weeks ago. It was a strange match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, in which the Italian looked in control up until the moment when he injured his leg.

After that, Sinner was unable to really counter the Greek, and Tsitsipas went on to win the match. He would win the event in the end, so it was a very painful loss, also because of a missed crucial call, for the Italian, but he got over it.

He’s focused on the Madrid Open, and he has to be because the first match will be tricky. Sonego might not be a Top 10 player, but he’s a capable player who can do a lot of damage on his day. He has a good serve and quite a bit of power, which could create problems for his compatriot.

Head-to-head:

So far, Sonego hasn’t been able to create many problems for Sinner because the younger Italian won all four of their matches. He’s only dropped a set once, and it happened on grass last year.

It was quite eventful between them last year. They played four matches, and all were pretty decisive wins for Sinner. The most recent one happened at the Vienna Open, and it was a 6-2, 6-4 win for Sinner.

Preview:

As the previous matches show, this matchup is very favorable for Sinner. Its location in Madrid and clay can add some minor complications, but not enough to dramatically change the matchup. I expect the world no. 2 to win it comfortably in two sets.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in two sets.
