Twenty-two-year-old Jannik Sinner is the new champion of the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. In a spectacular final, the top-seeded Italian defeated the fifth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 5 minutes.
By winning the title, Sinner—who won his first major at the Australian Open last month—is at a career-high world No. 3, which makes him the highest ranked Italian tennis player in history.
In the physically intense final, there were sensational baseline rallies with Sinner playing his best in the most important moments.
For the match, he struck 23 winners and 26 unforced errors, while de Minaur struck 20 winners and 29 unforced errors.
There were only three points between the pair. Sinner won a total of 79 points, while de Minaur won 76 points.
Sinner was more dominant on the first serve with 78% of first serve points won compared to de Minaur’s 63% of first serve points won.
De Minaur was more dominant on the second serve with 54% of second serve points won compared to Sinner’s 39% of second serve points won.
Sinner hit four aces and one double fault, while de Minaur hit 10 aces and three double faults.
They both had break point chances. Sinner converted four out of eight, while de Minaur converted two out of six.
In his post-match press conference, de Minaur said: “I played right now the best player in the world. And I was very close. Chances here, chances there. Ultimately, he was too good in the end. But steps in the right direction. And I think I’m really taking it up a step and showing this is where I belong.
“In the past, matches like these, I would have felt like I got outpowered. And I don’t think today was the case. I felt quite comfortable in the rallies, and often dictated most of them. So, I’ve adapted, I’ve gotten better—like I’ve done my whole career—and I’ll continue to look to improve and hopefully close the gap even more and play more and more of these types of matches.”
In his post-match press conference, Sinner said: “It’s a wonderful tournament. Incredible players here. The level is always very high.”
The Italian said next week he was going to see his parents and also his grandparents. “I like to go to the place where I am born because also to see my grandma and grandpa—they are a little bit older—so it’s always great to see them and then hopefully have some great times.”
