Sofia Kenin continues to puzzle tennis fans, but she notched her first victory since January 9th, 2024, with a superb comeback against the world number 235.
The American is enduring one of the toughest moments of her career. Most of her previous issues were related to injuries and her inability to remain healthy, but this losing streak was different.
This one might even be worse because she’s playing tennis but failing to do it well. This match allowed her to snap a nine-match losing streak because she was facing world number 235 in a lower-tier WTA 125 event, and she did it, but nobody will feel too well after this win.
She started well, breaking Irene Burillo Escorihuela in the match’s first game, but things took a turn for the worse rather quickly. Playing a Spanish player on Spanish soil is never easy, but this is the type of match the former Australian Open champion shouldn’t be losing, especially since her tennis looks really good in doubles.
She fell behind 3-1 in the second but battled back to take a 4-3 lead with a chance to make it 5-3. She lost her serve, and it was 4-4, but she broke once more and finally won the second set 6-4.
It wasn’t a good match for Kenin, whose level went up and down dramatically during it. At times, she was playing amazing and crushing her opponent, but then she couldn’t hit the court.
That’s why the third set started with four consecutive breaks, after which her Spanish opponent took a 4-2 lead. Kenin would fight back to a 4-4 tie and then break once more to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
It took her over two hours, but she finally won again. It’s been 112 days since January 9th, when she last won, but she’s back.
