Manchester United’s Win Over Sunderland Bolsters Coach Ruben Amorim
According to sources at ESPN, the management of Manchester United is confident that the team stands united behind head coach Ruben Amorim after recent discussions with players. This positivity follows United’s 2-0 victory against Sunderland on Saturday, which has eased some of the pressure on Amorim amid a challenging start to the season.
Mason Mount, following the match, expressed that the squad is “100% behind the gaffer,” emphasizing the team’s support for their coach. Defender Matthijs de Ligt also voiced his backing for Amorim after the team suffered a 3-1 defeat against Brentford earlier.
CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have engaged in informal talks with squad members, including captain Bruno Fernandes, to gauge the mood within the team, and they are assured of ongoing support for Amorim, who previously managed Sporting CP.
While these discussions were not intended to evaluate Amorim’s future, they have reportedly yielded positive feedback about the coach and the overall atmosphere in the locker room. Any decision regarding Amorim’s future, who is under contract until 2027, would involve Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer, though Berrada and Wilcox would provide their insights as well.
Berrada and Wilcox, who began their roles following Ratcliffe’s investment in February 2024, have made an effort to connect more closely with both Amorim and the players, aided by their offices at the recently renovated Carrington training complex.
Enhanced communication has been a focus since relocating to the main facility in August, fostering interactions that did not occur under previous leadership. In contrast, former CEO Richard Arnold was primarily based at Old Trafford, while his predecessor, Ed Woodward, frequently visited Carrington, emphasizing the importance of being present among the players.
Historically, Woodward’s decision to dismiss former coach Jose Mourinho in December 2018 was influenced by his perception that the manager had lost the players’ support.
