Spurs Show Interest in Darius Garland and Andrew Nembhard – Basketball Insider Reports

San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama (ankle) to remain sidelined vs Warriors

The San Antonio Spurs are looking to build their roster around Victor Wembanyama as they develop the superstar center. The team brought in Chris Paul this offseason to be their floor general, but they were reportedly aggressive in pursuing a couple of other guards to pair in their backcourt. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Spurs reportedly contacted the Indiana Pacers and the Cleveland Cavaliers about potentially trading for Darius Garland or Andrew Nembhard.

Nembhard recently signed a three-year extension and the Cavaliers have now limited trade talks surrounding Garland. San Antonio knows they need a true point guard to lead the offensive unit and orchestrate pick-and-roll scenarios with Victor Wembanyama. Hence, they were able to secure Chris Paul on a one-year deal.

Spurs Looking to Build Around Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama could potentially be the future face of not only the Spurs, but the entire NBA. The French big man demonstrated why he was the number one overall pick last season, showcasing exceptional talent that lived up to the hype. During his rookie year, Wembanyama easily claimed the Rookie of the Year title with impressive stats across the board. Head coach Gregg Popovich is the perfect mentor for a talent like him, ensuring a solid supporting cast is formed around Wembanyama. This support begins with a reliable point guard, leading to the interest in Garland and Nembhard. However, Chris Paul remains a strong consolation prize due to his experience and playmaking abilities.

A Short-Term Solution in Chris Paul

Despite not being at his peak, Chris Paul is still a valuable addition to the Spurs. His leadership as a floor general will be crucial for Wembanyama’s progression. Speculation suggests that the Spurs could surprise in the NBA Play-In Tournament this season, with Wembanyama gaining further experience and Popovich at the helm. Additionally, the team has high hopes for their draft pick, Stephon Castle. With these factors in mind, the San Antonio Spurs anticipate the end of their rebuilding phase to be near.
