Bradley Carnell was relieved of his duties as head coach of St. Louis CITY SC after a disappointing 2024 season so far. The team’s Technical Director John Hackworth will take over on an interim basis as they begin their search for a new head coach.
“Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” said CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Unfortunately, based on our Year 2 results to date, we believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club as we regroup and look to improve both our performance and our results.”
Carnell was appointed as St. Louis’ first head coach in January 2022 and achieved success in their debut MLS season last year. St. Louis finished with a 17-12-3 record in the regular season, earning the No. 1 seed in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
However, 2024 has been a struggle for St. Louis, with a current record of 3-7-10. They currently sit in 26th place in the Supporter Shield standings.
With almost 30 years of coaching experience at various levels in the U.S. soccer ecosystem, Hackworth is no stranger to the game. He previously coached the Philadelphia Union and USL team Louisville City FC, winning the 2018 USL Championship. Hackworth has also worked with several U.S. youth national teams in the past.
St. Louis will continue their busy summer schedule with a match against the San Jose Earthquakes on July 3rd.
