Stan Wawrinka is not enjoying a very good year so far, and he won’t be competing at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome because he withdrew from the event.
The Swiss player is likely very close to retirement at this point in his career. He hasn’t played that well this year, holding a 2-8 record, and it won’t get better anytime soon, as he won’t play in the upcoming weeks.
The Swiss veteran was expected to play at the Italian Open in Rome next, but he pulled out and won’t be playing at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. There isn’t clarity as to why he pulled out, but it’s clear that neither his fitness nor his body can keep up with the high demands of modern-day tennis.
Looking at his results over the past year, Wawrinka generally did better on courts where he didn’t really have to rely on that. Indoor tennis was solid for him because the rallies are generally shorter, and he can finish them off quickly.
Clay tennis hasn’t been that good this year, with a 2-6 record overall. He did beat fellow veteran Albert Ramos in Marrakech, which was a solid win, as well as Pedro Cachin in Buenos Aires earlier this year.
The rest of his matches were quite challenging for him, including his last one last week in Aix en Provence. For all we know, he might have injured himself last week because it was a long match.
Still, Wawrinka hasn’t mentioned any kind of retirement yet, even though his results haven’t been that good. He’ll likely make a comeback at the upcoming Geneva Open as a native Swiss player.
Obviously, there are multiple routes to choose from for Wawrinka, but the target is clear, and that’s competing at the French Open, which he won in the past.
