The New York Jets didn’t look good in the season opener.

It’s not that they couldn’t lose to the San Francisco 49ers.

They are the reigning NFC champions for a reason.

However, the fact that they failed to even look in the same tier as them should be concerning for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

More than that, it may have raised even more questions about Robert Saleh and whether he’s the guy they need to coach them right now.

Talking on ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith argued that Saleh could be on borrowed time right now.

He stated that people didn’t consider the Jets a contender only because of Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson.

Instead, analysts raved about their defense, and even though they lost Bryce Huff and didn’t have Haason Reddick out there, Saleh didn’t seem to have a gameplan or their players ready.

More than that, the fact that he used to serve under Kyle Shanahan and was with the Niners for four years made people think that he’d have a clue as to what they were going to do, and that didn’t seem to be the case.

Smith argues that there should be no doubts about the Jets’ defense, and if that’s the case, then there’s no reason to keep Saleh around.

Saleh won’t have any valid excuses anymore.

He has the quarterback and the personnel, and anything short of a deep postseason trip could and should cost him his job.
