Stephen A. Smith expresses frustration over Kawhi Leonard’s Olympics controversy

Kawhi

Clippers star Kawhi Leonard has withdrawn from Team USA, casting doubt on his future Olympic participation, as predicted by Stephen A. Smith.

Prior to his withdrawal, Smith had questioned Leonard’s presence on the team, considering his history of injuries.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more upset at a player in a Team USA uniform,” Smith said on The OG’s podcast. “Remember how eager he was to join Team USA? Do you realize how many games he’s missed?

“Talking about playing in the summer, he could get hurt just from the flight to Paris. I wouldn’t let him play. If I were Steve Ballmer, I would do everything to ensure he’s not on Team USA. I don’t trust he’ll leave healthy.

“If I asked you to bet that he will play this summer and be healthy for the season, I’m pretty sure none of you would take that bet.”

Leonard only played in two postseason games for the Clippers due to knee inflammation.

USA Basketball stated that Leonard’s decision was influenced by observations from the Clippers and Team USA officials during camp, without mentioning injury.

“Kawhi has been preparing for the Olympics over the past weeks, feeling ready to compete,” USA Basketball said. “However, it was determined by USA Basketball and the Clippers that he should focus on the upcoming season rather than the Olympics in Paris.”

Boston champion Derrick White will replace Leonard on the team.
