At 37, Stephen Curry continues to be one of the NBA’s most dynamic players, consistently delivering outstanding performances and keeping defenses on their toes. Nevertheless, even this Golden State Warriors legend acknowledges that retirement is approaching.
In a recent conversation with Malika Andrews of ESPN, Curry was confronted with the age-old question: when will he hang up his sneakers? His answer was refreshingly straightforward.
“No clue. I just know it’s closer than it was even yesterday,” Curry responded. “Acknowledging it is fun, because the more I talk about it, the more I appreciate what all goes into preparing yourself. But all of that stuff is just the privilege that you’ve earned. I’m trying not to put any timestamps or anything, other than the sense of urgency on it now.”
Entering his 16th season in the NBA, Curry still embodies the essence of a superstar. Last season, he averaged 24.5 points and six assists per game, which earned him both All-NBA and All-Star accolades, along with a top ten finish in the MVP voting. His exceptional movement, sharpshooting, and ability to create space off the ball remain the backbone of the Warriors’ offensive strategy, ensuring the team’s competitiveness.
Curry has two years remaining on his current contract and will be eligible for an extension next offseason, similar to Kevin Durant. However, it’s clear that the Warriors are in no rush to force a decision from him.
“He holds all the cards,” noted Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, emphasizing that the Warriors “will give him whatever he wants.”
With teammates Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green prioritizing health for the postseason, the Warriors are banking on their seasoned core for one more significant playoff run.
