According to an ESPN report on Friday, UConn freshman standout Stephon Castle is entering the NBA Draft after playing a pivotal role in the Huskies’ 2024 national championship victory. Standing at 6-foot-6, Castle became a starter for the national champions at the young age of 19, averaging 27 minutes per game.
While Castle’s 3-point shooting percentage was only 26.7%, he excelled in other areas for UConn. He showcased his playmaking skills with 2.9 assists per game, demonstrated a smooth scoring touch inside, and displayed physicality as a finisher at the rim. His defense was particularly impressive, notably in the national championship game where he helped contain Purdue’s guards.
Ranked as the 9th best high school player in the Class of 2023 by 247Sports, Castle lived up to the five-star hype he generated at Newton High School in Georgia. Despite his brief time at UConn, Castle will be remembered for his significant contributions to the program’s sixth national title.
Stephon Castle’s NBA Draft Outlook
Castle’s main area for improvement is his 3-point shooting. However, he is considered one of the more NBA-ready prospects from the college ranks this season. CBS Sports ranks him 10th in the 2024 NBA Draft Prospect Rankings, and he was placed 8th in a recent mock draft by Kyle Boone.
“Castle stood out on a talented UConn team with his defensive intensity and length throughout the season,” wrote Boone. “While he is still developing on offense, there is a strong foundation to build upon, making Castle a promising prospect.”
“He is a five-star recruit with great size playing a significant role for one of the top teams in the nation,” noted another analyst. “Despite concerns about his shooting, Castle’s overall game is encouraging.”
Impact on UConn
UConn head coach Dan Hurley faced the challenge of replacing key starters from the 2023 championship team but managed to lead the Huskies to another title with Castle playing a crucial role. As Castle and other key players depart for the NBA, UConn will undergo significant changes for the upcoming season.
