Arsenal Clinches Crucial Victory in Lisbon
On Tuesday evening, Arsenal secured a significant away win in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with substitute Kai Havertz scoring a stoppage-time goal that stunned Sporting CP in Lisbon.
The match, held at the José Alvalade Stadium, was tightly contested, with tactical gameplay dominating the proceedings until Havertz emerged as the game-changer.
Substituted in during the 70th minute for Martin Ødegaard, Havertz marked his presence in the 91st minute, skillfully positioning himself in the box to connect with a well-placed pass from fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli. His composed finish sent the ball past goalkeeper Rui Silva, much to the dismay of the home fans.
“Outstanding Kai Havertz! Brilliant play from Gabriel Martinelli, with Havertz calmly slotting home following an exquisite first touch.”
Crucial Win for the Gunners
The 1-0 scoreline ended Sporting’s impressive streak of 17 consecutive home victories, granting Arsenal a narrow yet vital advantage to take to the Emirates Stadium for the return leg next week.
In a frustrating first half, both Noni Madueke and Sporting’s Maximiliano Araújo struck the woodwork. However, Arsenal began to find their rhythm as the game progressed.
They believed they had taken the lead early in the second half when Martín Zubimendi scored a stunning goal, only for VAR to rule it out due to an offside in the build-up involving Viktor Gyökeres.
Despite this disappointment, Arsenal maintained their discipline and Havertz’s late winner averted a third consecutive game without a victory, following some challenging domestic outings.
David Raya Shines for Arsenal
While Havertz’s late goal stole the headlines, David Raya was equally impactful at the opposite end of the field.
The Spanish goalkeeper delivered a “masterclass” in shot-stopping, especially in the closing moments as Sporting sought an equalizer.
Raya produced a spectacular low save from a diving header by Geny Catamo in the 83rd minute and followed it with a crucial double save in the 87th minute after a cross was initially spilled.
“David Raya against Sporting CP:
- 5 saves
- 5 saves from inside the box
- 1 punch
- 100% successful runouts
- 93% pass accuracy
His quick recovery and ability to smother a follow-up shot ensured a clean sheet and set the stage for Arsenal’s late victory. With Gabriel Magalhães sidelined due to injury, Raya’s leadership and distribution were vital in navigating a makeshift defense through the challenging atmosphere in Lisbon.
