Jan Lennard Struff had an amazing surge last year but failed to win a trophy, but he’s got it now after winning the 2024 Munich Open on home soil.
The German has been a solid player for a long time but has suffered a huge dip in form in recent years. Last year’s season was a tremendous surge from him as he played some amazing tennis for a while.
He made the Madrid Open final but unfortunately lost to Carlos Alcaraz, which left him without any ATP trophies to his name. It was a bit frustrating because he’s not the youngest anymore.
Luckily for him, though, he’s back to playing some really solid tennis, and it worked out for him at the ATP 250 tournament in Munich. The German demonstrated all of his talents with a 6-2 6-0 win over a sick Holger Rune and backed it up in the final.
He faced Taylor Fritz, who secured the American no. 1 spot with his run at the event, and bested him in two sets. The first set was rather interesting, as Struff broke early but also lost his serve immediately after that.
He would waste a few chances to break later on, barely surviving at 5-4 for Fritz. The American wasted some costly set points because his opponent would break in the next game and win the opening set 7-5.
Whoever won that set would likely carry the momentum into the second set. They were very close in terms of their level, and momentum played a huge factor in this match.
Struff jumped out to an early lead in the second set, which showed that momentum really played a role. He was feeling good about his game and then added another break later on to cruise to the finish line. The final score was 7-5, 6-3 for the German, who is now an ATP title winner at 33 years of age.
