Suns assistant coach John Lucas III compares Kevin Durant to LeBron James and Kobe Bryant

Suns assistant coach John Lucas III compares Kevin Durant to LeBron James and Kobe Bryant

During a recent interview on the Scoop B Radio Podcast with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Phoenix Suns assistant coach John Lucas III explored the comparisons between Suns’ star Kevin Durant and NBA legends LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Lucas discussed the similarities in their approach to the game, emphasizing their mutual passion for basketball and commitment to studying the sport.

He highlighted their dedication to analyzing opponents’ tendencies and improving their own game, stating, “They’re wired similarly because they all love the game and they study the game.”

When discussing Durant’s leadership style, Lucas challenged the criticism often aimed at the two-time NBA champion, asserting that Durant leads by example and uplifts his teammates in his own way. He defended Durant against claims that he lacks leadership qualities, saying, “He leads by example. He’s just not who people want him to be and that’s okay.”

Lucas pointed out the distinct leadership styles of James, Bryant, and Durant. He described James as a vocal leader who effectively communicates on the court, guiding his teammates through verbal instruction. In contrast, Bryant leads by demonstrating his work ethic and intensity through his actions, setting an example for his team.

For Durant, Lucas highlighted a combination of both approaches, noting his quieter demeanor alongside his ability to lead through his on-court performance. He explained, “KD is the exact same but he is a little bit of both but more quiet but also he’ll be like, Let me show you how to get a bucket real quick.”

Additionally, Lucas stressed the importance of understanding the unseen dynamics of leadership within a team, noting, “everyone else gets to see who’s on the court when the TV’s on…but they don’t get to see…where the REAL leadership roles come out.”

Ultimately, Lucas emphasized that while each player has a unique leadership style, they all share an undeniable competitiveness and determination, known as having a “DOG in ’em.” He highlighted their shared commitment to excellence and their influence on the game both on and off the court.
