Svitolina Advances At Australian Open Looking To Capitalize On Swiatek’s Loss

Elina Svitolina keeps on winning at the 2024 Australian Open in Melbourne, as the Ukrainian bested Viktorija Golubic in two sets to advance to the fourth round.

No mother in recent years on the WTA Tour has played as impressive as Elina Svitolina has. The Ukrainian made a deep run at Roland Garros, only to be beaten by Aryna Sabalenka.

She was playing really well at Wimbledon, losing only to Marketa Vondrousova in the semi-final. The US Open wasn’t as good, but she still made the third round, and now she’s in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

She’s been playing really well for over a year now, and this match is just the latest confirmation of that. Golubic can be a tricky player, but she hasn’t looked that great lately.

It wasn’t a particularly close match because it lasted only 67 minutes, and the Ukrainian cruised in both sets. The first set was 6-2 for her largely thanks to just playing better in the rallies.

She’s always been a fighter who grinds out rallies, and that’s been the case here. Golubic misfired far too much to remain competitive in that one. The second set didn’t offer anything particularly different as, once again, Svitolina exerted a lot of pressure on her opponent, and Golubic couldn’t handle it.

The second set was more aggressive from Svitolina as the Swiss player took a bit of a step back in that one. Overall, it was just not good enough from Golubic, who did play okay and can build upon this performance in the coming weeks.

For Svitolina, it’s a good draw after Linda Noskova beat Iga Swiatek earlier today. That’s a matchup Svitolina should win, and if she does, she’ll be in the quarters, and then who knows what might happen after that. The final score of the match was 6-2 6-3 for the Ukrainian.
