Thursday’s action in Melbourne featured top seed Iga Swiatek overcome a 4-1 deficit in the third se to defeat former finalist Danielle Collins, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Needing three hours and 14 minutes to advance, Swiatek will next face Linda Noskova for a place in the last 16.

Elsewhere, last year’s finalist Elena Rybakina lost a heart-breaker to Anna Blinkova 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(20) and No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula also crashed out of the event, losing to Clara Burel 6-4, 6-2.

Other women’s winners on the day included No. 11 seed Jelena Ostapenko, No. 12 seed Qinwen Zheng and two-time former winner Victoria Azarenka.

On the men’s side, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz needed three hours and 25 minutes to get past Lorenzo Sonego, while No. 8 seed Holger Rune was ousted in four sets by Arthur Cazaux.

The day was also ruled by five set encounters as No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 9 seed Hubert Hurkacz and No. 11 seed Casper Ruud all went the distance to advance.

Friday’s schedule Down Under will feature No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 9 seed Barbora Krejcikova.
