Iga Swiatek auctioned off her 2023 Roland Garros winning racquet for charity, and it was solid for over $60,000.
Iga Swiatek has been championing several notable causes in her career. Mental health has been one of them as something she’s dealt with personally, but it’s not the only thing, of course.
She championed many other notable causes, including relief efforts for Ukraine and similar things. Her most recent contribution has been the auctioning off her racquet, which she used to win the 2023 Roland Garros.
It was a pretty tough event for the Polish player who struggled at the event but managed to still win it. She admitted afterward that it was the hardest one she had won.
Despite the special memory, she didn’t keep the racquet she used but rather offered to auction it off for charity. The auction was organized in her native Poland, and the racquet sold for over $60,000.
The money will go to charities fighting to raise awareness of road accidents involving children. There were 1794 road accidents involving children in Poland in 2022; 54 of them tragically passed away because of that.
The auction was organized with the backing of several Polish motorsports legends for whom the cause is close to heart. It’s great to see Swiatek contributing to efforts like this.
It’s something she’s been doing for a very long time, and hopefully, it will inspire more players and athletes to do the same. She’s currently away from the courts as the season ended not long ago, but she’ll be quickly back on the courts to prepare for next year.
The reigning world number one has high ambitions for next season after playing a somewhat weaker season than the standards she set the year before. Perhaps she will win some more Grand Slams, and then she can auction off some more racquets.
