Sydney | Australia edges out Norway in thrilling opening match of Group D at the United Cup

The United Cup kicked off in Sydney with a dramatic contest as host nation Australia faced Norway in Group D. Unfortunately for the Australians, they were without their top female player, Maya Joint, due to a sudden illness. Joint, who has had a successful 2023 since switching allegiance from the United States, was expected to play a pivotal role in the competition but was forced to the sidelines just a day before the match.

Australian captain Leyton Hewitt expressed cautious optimism, hoping that Joint’s absence would be brief. Despite her struggles with illness, Hewitt noted that the young player had shown promising form in practice earlier in the week. “We’re just trying to give her the best chance of having 100 percent energy when she goes out there to play,” Hewitt stated.

In Joint’s absence, Storm Hunter stepped up as her replacement for the night’s singles match against Norway’s Malene Helgo. Hunter, 31, was making her return to competitive tennis following a lengthy recovery from an Achilles injury that had sidelined her for nearly a year. Her experience and determination shone through as she took to the court.

Hunter wasted no time asserting control in the match, quickly breaking Helgo’s serve twice to claim the first set 6-2. The second set was more competitive, with Helgo initially taking a 4-1 lead. However, Hunter showcased her resilience, leveling the set at 5-5 before forcing a tiebreak. The Australian dominated the tiebreak, ultimately finishing the match with a 6-2, 7-6(3) triumph.

“This is pretty emotional for me,” said Hunter after her victory. “It’s been a tough two years… I never thought I’d be back on this court in a singles match playing for Australia.” She also expressed her disappointment for Joint, emphasizing the ups and downs that come with competitive sports.

The momentum shifted in the following match as Norway’s Casper Ruud leveled the tie after defeating Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-3, 6-3. Ruud’s performance was a masterclass in aggression and precision as he efficiently dealt with de Minaur’s serve, converting three out of ten break points while fending off five break point opportunities against him.

“I’m happy to get a great start,” Ruud reflected post-match, acknowledging the challenge of playing in front of a host nation’s crowd. “To beat Alex here in Australia is one of the toughest challenges we have in tennis.”

With the tie balanced at one match apiece, the outcome was determined by mixed doubles competition, where Hunter teamed up with John-Patrick Smith. The duo faced the Norwegian pair of Viktor Durasovic and Ulrikke Eikeri. After losing the first set, Hunter and Smith bounced back spectacularly, winning the match 4-6, 6-1 [10-4].

Post-match comments from Smith showed his appreciation for Hunter’s contributions. “Storm set it up big time there… She had really good control on all her shots,” he noted, reflecting on their strong performance in the decisive match.

Australia’s win positions them favorably in Group D as they look ahead to their next match against Czechia. The team is eager to secure a spot in the quarter-finals and build on the momentum generated from this opening victory. As for Joint, fans are hopeful she will make a swift recovery and return to represent her nation in the upcoming matches.
