In a thrilling encounter at Ken Rosewall Arena, Australia showcased their resilience by defeating Czechia 2-1, securing a spot in the quarter-finals of the United Cup on Tuesday night. The host nation’s victory was pivotal in topping Group D.
Alex de Minaur emerged as the standout player for Australia, stepping up to deliver crucial wins after the Czech player Barbora Krejcikova had earlier gained momentum by defeating Maya Joint 6-4, 6-1. De Minaur faced Jakub Mensik in the men’s singles and demonstrated his skill with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph. This set the stage for the deciding mixed doubles match, where de Minaur teamed with Storm Hunter to vanquish the Czech duo of Miriam Skoch and Dalibor Svrcina 6-2, 6-3.
The match had a vibrant atmosphere, significantly fueling the Australian team’s performance. De Minaur, reflecting on his journey, expressed satisfaction after bouncing back from a disappointing opening match against Casper Ruud. “I didn’t start the year the way I wanted to, but I’m happy I bounced back today,” he commented.
Krejcikova’s victory earlier in the day not only propelled her team into the quarter-finals as the best runner-up but also eliminated Canada from contention. The 30-year-old Czech player, currently ranked 63rd in the world, showcased remarkable form after battling injuries that sidelined her for much of the previous season. Her win over Joint was particularly impressive, having improved her performance significantly since her return.
Krejcikova seized an early lead in her match, quickly establishing a 4-1 advantage. Although Joint was able to claw back to 4-3, Krejcikova maintained her composure to take the first set. “I felt really good to be back out here today,” Joint remarked. “I was pretty disappointed I couldn’t play the first match.”
In the deciding set, Krejcikova’s dominance continued as she won the first four games, ultimately finishing the match in one hour and 15 minutes. “I’m very happy with my performance,” said Krejcikova. “It’s nice to have some matches under my belt; I felt a little better on the court today.”
Meanwhile, Mensik displayed some flair during his game against de Minaur, including a highlight-worthy tweener volley. However, de Minaur’s experience shone through as he saved all four break points he encountered, resulting in a steady performance that leveled the overall tie for Australia.
Following their singles success, de Minaur and Hunter clinched the tie for Australia in the mixed doubles, securing the victory that set Australia firmly at the top of Group D. Hunter praised de Minaur’s energy and skill under pressure, stating, “Demon brings energy; he’s so clutch under pressure.”
With this victory, Australia secured their place in the next round, awaiting confirmation of their quarter-final opponent as Poland continues to contest in Group F. Other notable upcoming matches include a showdown between the USA and Greece, along with Switzerland facing Argentina, and Belgium meeting Czechia to determine the final semi-finalist in the United Cup.
