The Seattle Seahawks have invited Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, brother of Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, to participate in their rookie minicamp next weekend, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported Sunday.
There, Taulia will have a chance to prove himself and earn a contract to join his brother in the NFL.
Tua Tagovailoa was the fifth overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, but as the 2024 NFL Draft ended, Tua’s younger brother was still available.
The Tagovailoa name is very prominent in the NFL world. Tua was a CFB national champion and a Maxwell and Walter Camp Award winner. He’s since developed into a Pro Bowl-caliber passer with the Miami Dolphins.
While Taulia is not of the same caliber as his older brother, he still offers some intriguing traits as a QB.
He began his career at his brother’s alma mater, Alabama, but he transferred to Maryland, where he became a four-year starter and finished his Terrapins run as the Big Ten’s all-time leading passer with 11,256 career yards. Taulia threw over 3,000 yards in each of his final three seasons and was a second-team All-Big Ten pick as a junior and senior.
An injury limited Taulia to four games in 2020, but in 2021, he came back with 3,860 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 picks while completing just under 70% of his passes.
In 2022, he completed 67% of his attempts for 3,008 yards, 18 touchdowns, and eight picks and was an All-Big Ten performer while becoming Maryland’s all-time leader in career passing yards and passing TDs.
The 2023 season was another solid one for Taulia, as he completed 66.4% of his passes for 3,377 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 picks, at 7.7 yards per attempt.
Back in elementary school, Taulia played center for his brother. Now, following his solid college career at Maryland, he has a rookie camp invite that offers him an opportunity to follow Tua to the NFL.

The Seahawks’ QB room is currently comprised of Geno Smith, Sam Howell, and San Jose’s Chevon Cordeiro, who Seattle signed as an undrafted free agent. The top two spots are locked up, but there is room at the bottom should Taulia impress.
Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings analyzed Taulia’s skill set and projection at the next level in his scouting report.
Cummings describes Taulia as an above-average athlete who has enough speed to evade rushers and reach the sideline while showcasing the necessary arm elasticity to adjust his arm angles on short throws.

“It’s worth noting that Tagovailoa isn’t a liability from a talent perspective,” Cummings wrote. “He has a baseline degree of arm talent and is an above-average athlete with solid creation capacity and off-platform ability. His arm strength is much closer to average than elite, but he can generate enough velocity in the short range.
“For Tagovailoa, the issues revolve more around a lacking ceiling than a lacking floor. His non-elite arm talent and athleticism do detract from his ultimate potential, and he needs to be better on the operational side to compensate.”
