Steve Bellamy, the visionary behind the Tennis Channel, has embarked on an exciting new venture that merges elements of various racquet sports into one innovative game called TYPTI. The announcement was made during a Los Angeles press conference, showcasing an impressive consortium of investors backing this fresh concept.
TYPTI is designed to be played on a standard pickleball court, using a distinctive 22-inch racquet and a unique channeled foam ball measuring 3.5 inches in diameter. The game introduces a novel scoring system aimed at making play engaging and dynamic. Bellamy is not only looking to establish a new sport but also to create an ecosystem around it, which includes organizing tournaments, developing partnerships, and nurturing a community of players and fans.
At the launch event, Bellamy shared his commitment to fostering a comprehensive framework that includes tennis and pickleball clubs, brands interested in engaging with sports marketing, and individuals passionate about racquet sports. He highlighted that the sport aims to reignite interest among the 25 million former players in the U.S. who have stepped away from the court, stating that the objective is not to compete with existing sports, but rather to create a pathway back to them.
The inaugural TYPTI event is set for February 25 at the Calabasas Pickleball Club, featuring a robust prize pool of over $100,000 for the professional division. Over the course of its first year, TYPTI plans to host events with a total of $500,000 in prize money and aims to exceed $1 million in the subsequent year, allowing players from across the country to participate and compete.
In a statement about the game, Bellamy emphasized the benefits TYPTI offers: it is nearly silent during play, easy on the joints due to its low-impact nature, and eliminates the overhead serve which can often be a barrier for beginners. The TYPTI organization has also established partnerships with various racquet and coaching bodies, including the Racquet Sports Professional Association, which represents over 14,000 teaching professionals.
Notable investors in TYPTI include a star-studded lineup: motivational speaker Tony Robbins, former NFL quarterback Drew Brees, actor Chris Pine, filmmaker JJ Abrams, comedian Bert Kreischer, actress Tiffany Haddish, and many more. This broad range of supporters not only signifies the growing interest in the sport but also helps to elevate its profile in the competitive landscape of recreational activities.
The TYPTI project represents an exciting new chapter for racquet sports, as it seeks to blend fun, competition, and community, ultimately aiming to bring new players back into the fold while gaining the interest of sports enthusiasts everywhere.
