Tennis Canada was saddened to learn of the passing of Alain Faucher on December 31 following a battle with cancer.
Over a span of nearly 30 years, Alain had a significant influence on the impressive growth of tennis in Granby, Quebec, most notably while serving as President and Director General of the Granby National Bank Championships from 2007-2022. His involvement in the tournament dates to the very first edition held in 1995. Under his leadership, the Championships, which initially staged a men’s ATP Challenger Tour tournament, expanded to include a women’s event in singles and doubles beginning in 2022. He was also responsible for ensuring that equal prize money was offered to all the athletes who played in Granby.
Alain stepped away from his role with the tournament in 2022 to focus on his health. This past summer, his notable contributions to the sport were honoured by inducting him into the Granby Tennis Hall of Fame. In addition, Centre Court at Tennis Saint-Luc where the Championships are held every July now bears his name: “Alain-Faucher Centre Court”.
Alain was also influential in bringing Davis Cup to Granby in 2006 when Canada played and beat Venezuela in the first round of Americas Zone Group I.
“Beyond his natural leadership, his ideas and his ability to unite people around him, what stood out most about Alain is that he was caring. He looked after his people; they were his priority. That’s how I’ll always remember Alain,” said Eugène Lapierre, Special Advisor to the CEO at Tennis Canada.
