The Enduring Appeal of Golf: Global Golf Post Elevates the Game

A game for life - Global Golf Post

Jen Hong and Julia Potter-Bobb, successful junior golfers and friends, have shared memories for nearly 30 years. The two women annually meet at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, but their bond was formed as kids practicing daily at Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Indiana. Potter-Bobb reflects on the impact of having someone her age, especially a female, to practice golf with, noting that their supportive relationship was valuable given the lack of girls in the sport during their childhood.

Although girls’ participation in golf has significantly increased since the late 1990s, Hong and Potter-Bobb continue to excel in the game, showcasing endless possibilities for remaining active in golf. Potter-Bobb, a decorated amateur golfer with victories at prestigious events, is currently competing in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur in West Newton, Massachusetts. On the other hand, Hong, who previously dominated junior golf, now navigates the golf industry as Maui Jim’s U.S. sales director for golf and tennis.

Despite their different paths after college, both Hong and Potter-Bobb have found their respective roles in the golf world. Hong’s transition away from competitive golf led her to discover fulfilling opportunities in fundraising and event management, ultimately landing her a role with Maui Jim. Potter-Bobb, who initially assumed she wouldn’t work in golf if she wasn’t playing, now serves as the director of business operations and member services at the Indiana Golf Association.

The duo’s post-professional golf journeys serve as a testament to the various career avenues available in the industry, emphasizing the importance of exploring options beyond competitive play. Both women encourage junior and college golfers to broaden their perspectives on a golf career, highlighting the diverse opportunities to stay involved in the game.
