The Least Strong Positons on the AL Contenders Still in the Running

The Weakest Positions on the Remaining AL Contenders

Kevin Sousa-USA TODAY Sports

Identifying the strongest players at each position among the remaining contenders in the National and American Leagues was no easy task. After evaluating the top players, it’s time to shine a light on the weakest ones. This analysis focuses on full-season performance, taking into account injuries and recent adjustments.

Each league will be highlighted separately, starting with the American League. As teams fight for playoff spots, some glaring weaknesses have emerged. Let’s take a closer look at the struggling players on these rosters.

**Catcher: Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges, Guardians**
The Cleveland Guardians boast a strong defense behind the plate, thanks to catchers Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges. However, their offensive performance leaves much to be desired. With Naylor sporting a 77 wRC+ and Hedges even worse at 20 wRC+, it’s clear that hitting is not their forte.

**First Base: Anthony Rizzo, Yankees**
At first base, the Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo has struggled to find his stride this season. With a .227/.298/.334 slash line and an 83 wRC+, Rizzo’s performance at the plate has been subpar. Despite some improvements from other players, the first base position remains a weak spot for the Yankees.

**Second Base: Jordan Westburg and Jackson Holliday, Orioles**
The Orioles have faced challenges at second base, with young players Jordan Westburg and Jackson Holliday struggling to make an impact. Holliday started the season on a high note but has since cooled off, while Westburg has yet to find his offensive rhythm. As a result, second base remains a concern for the Orioles.

**Shortstop: Brayan Rocchio, Guardians**
In the shortstop position, the Guardians have relied on Brayan Rocchio for most of the season. While Rocchio has shown strong defensive skills, his offensive production has been lacking. With a .209/.301/.320 slash line and an 81 wRC+, Rocchio’s performance falls below expectations for a regular shortstop.

**Third Base: Andy Ibáñez, Jace Jung, Zach McKinstry, and/or Matt Vierling, Tigers**
The Tigers have rotated multiple players at third base, trying to find a solution to their offensive struggles. With no player standing out as a consistent performer, the Tigers have struggled to find stability at the hot corner. This uncertainty poses a challenge as they make a final push for a playoff spot.

**Left Field: Alex Verdugo and Jasson Domínguez, Yankees**
In left field, the Yankees have struggled to find consistent production from Alex Verdugo. The talented outfielder has shown flashes of brilliance but has yet to string together a sustained period of strong performance. As the regular season winds down, left field remains a question mark for the Yankees.
