The Washington Nationals have been one of the more surprising teams through one month of the 2024 MLB season and are looking to end their streak of four consecutive last-place finishes in the NL East.
Fans recently learned one stat that added some context to how long it has been since the Nationals were even a decent baseball team.
MLB’s official Twitter account shared that the Nationals are now above .500 for the first time since July of 2021, a season where they still finished 65-97 and came in last.
Washington has won eight of its last 11 games as it is starting to get hot on both sides of the ball.
The stats don’t pop out in any way, as the Nats are middle of the road offensively so far in most major categories and below average in the pitching department, but they continue to find ways to win behind strong early-season performances at the plate from a pair of youngsters in CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia.
Washington is also getting a strong resurgence out of veteran outfielder Jesse Winker, who has an .808 OPS after batting .199 and .219 over the last two seasons.
Those three are carrying the offense while Trevor Williams, MacKenzie Gore, and Jake Irvin have been strong in the starting rotation.
The NL East is brutal at the top with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies both unsurprisingly looking like juggernauts, but the Nats’ road to finishing last again should come to an end since the Miami Marlins are a disaster.
Kudos to the Nats for starting to turn things around.
