Tiger Woods, the business partner and close friend of Rory McIlroy, has emerged as the unexpected obstacle to McIlroy’s return to the PGA Tour Policy Board.

James Corrigan of the Telegraph has reported that Woods, a 15-time major champion, voted against McIlroy rejoining the board which he left in November. The decision was also influenced by Patrick Cantlay, whom McIlroy has admitted to not getting along with. Cantlay opposes Saudi Arabian investment in the PGA Tour, a topic that remains under negotiation with the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund.

Woods and Cantlay are among the six player directors on the board, alongside Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Peter Malnati, and Webb Simpson. Simpson was supposed to make way for McIlroy but will now continue in his role.

McIlroy expressed his disappointment at the situation, stating that some board members were uncomfortable with his return. He decided not to rejoin the board after facing complexities in the process.

Woods’ objection to McIlroy’s return marks a curious turn in their relationship, especially considering their joint venture in TGL Golf. McIlroy left the board to focus on his game and family but was drawn back due to his dedication to the PGA Tour’s future.

The PGA Tour’s partnership with Strategic Sports Group, valued at up to $3 billion, happened in McIlroy’s absence. Talks with the PIF, which oversees the LIV Golf League, have been ongoing but a definitive agreement is yet to be reached.

McIlroy advocates for peace between the PGA Tour and PIF, while Woods believes the tour’s alliance with SSG has shifted priorities away from Saudi investment. The future of professional golf hangs in the balance as these discussions continue.
