Tokyo: Raducanu Signs with UNIQLO

Emma Raducanu is poised to unveil a new chapter in her professional career as she prepares to compete at Indian Wells, set to commence on March 4. The British tennis sensation has shifted her sponsorship allegiance from long-time partner Nike to UNIQLO, the Japanese apparel brand famously endorsed by Roger Federer among others.

In light of her recent health struggles, Raducanu expressed her eagerness to return to competitive form. “I was dealing with a virus that affected my performance,” she shared, acknowledging the challenging weeks preceding her participation in the Middle East tournaments. Raducanu emphasized her commitment to regaining full fitness ahead of the prestigious BNP Paribas Open.

UNIQLO had teased Raducanu’s arrival as their latest Global Brand Ambassador on social media, confirming the partnership with an enthusiastic announcement. “Emma Raducanu, our newest Global Brand Ambassador and Britain’s top-ranked female tennis player, will embody UNIQLO’s LifeWear philosophy, which emphasizes excellence and meaningful contributions to society,” the brand stated. Raducanu, excited about her collaboration, mentioned shared values with UNIQLO, hoping to inspire young individuals through her experience in tennis.

Historically affiliated with Nike since prior to her professional debut in 2018,Raducanu quickly became a significant figure for the brand, especially following her landmark triumph at the US Open in 2021, which marked her as the first qualifier to clinch a Grand Slam title. Speculation about her switch to UNIQLO initially surfaced in December, and reports suggest she has signed a lucrative deal valued at $300 million, with a guaranteed annual income of $3.5 million, plus additional performance incentives.

Alongside her apparel transition, Raducanu is navigating her coaching situation after ending her tenure with Francisco Roig following the Australian Open. While she is currently not actively seeking a new coach, Raducanu will rely on former British player Alexis Canter during her upcoming campaign in California and Miami, where she had notable success last year.

Reflecting on her relationship with Canter, she noted their previous successes in Washington and Cluj, providing her with the necessary support as she seeks to refine her aggressive gameplay. Currently placed at No. 25 in the WTA rankings, Raducanu hopes to rejuvenate her momentum after a tough string of results, having suffered three consecutive defeats in her last outings at tournaments in the Middle East.

At Indian Wells, Raducanu will be looking to erase the memory of her first-round exit last year and will aim to build on her previous performances, including a fourth-round showing in 2023. Her dedication to reclaiming her form, alongside her fresh partnership with UNIQLO, sets the stage for an intriguing start to the season.
