Manchester United’s veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has addressed his contract situation and his unexpected appointment as a training goalkeeper with the England national team.
The 38-year-old academy product returned to the club in 2021 and has primarily served as the third-choice goalkeeper, featuring in only three official games for United.
While his contract is set to expire at the end of the month and initial reports suggested he would not be offered a new deal, recent updates indicate that the club and Heaton are currently engaged in discussions to extend his contract, with United feeling optimistic about the outcome.
Heaton made headlines again when he was surprisingly called up to work with England’s goalkeeping department in preparation for the upcoming Euro 2024 competition.
Addressing his future at the club, Heaton expressed to the PA that retirement is not on his mind, even if a new deal with United is not reached.
He emphasized his readiness and enthusiasm to continue playing, praising the talent and commitment of the current England squad as they gear up for a significant summer of football.
If Heaton remains at Carrington, there is a possibility of transitioning into a coaching role, especially if his involvement in the Euros proves successful. Similar plans are already being considered for another academy veteran, Jonny Evans.
