Tomas Machac enjoyed probably the best week of his tennis career at the 2025 Mexican Open in Acapulco, winning the first title of his career.
Machac arrived in Acapulco as one of the seeded players but not among the top favorites, given the strength of the field at the ATP 500 event. Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and Holger Rune were all competing in Mexico.
However, prior to their second-round matches, they all got food poisoning, which opened up the draw for other players. Machac seized this opportunity expertly.
He defeated his compatriot Jakub Mensik, followed by Daniel Altmaier in the first two rounds. Instead of facing top-seed Zverev, the Czech player met and beat Learner Tien.
Machac then triumphed over Brandon Nakashima to set up a final showdown with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard survived four consecutive match points in his opening match but managed to reach the final.
Additionally, Davidovich Fokina had just contested the Delray Beach Open final a couple of weeks prior, which may have left him a bit tired, but also in great form.
Both players served impeccably in the final’s first set, with neither facing a break point, leading to a tie-break to decide the set.
In the tie-break, both played extremely well, but ultimately, Machac emerged victorious, winning 8-6 to take the first set. The Czech lost only three points on serve throughout the entire set.
Machac faced a break point early in the second set but managed to hold his serve and quickly established dominance on the court. He broke his opponent’s serve twice and won five consecutive games, sealing the match 7-6(6), 6-2, and claiming his first ATP title.
This victory also marked a significant milestone for him, placing him within the Top 20 of the ATP Rankings as he moves up five spots to become World No. 20.
Clearly thrilled about his first title, Machac struggled to find words, overwhelmed by emotion.
“The emotions right now are just relief, because it was a tough week. Especially when I have this form, I don’t like to lose in the final. I’m really happy that I managed to win today because Alejandro was playing really, really good. It was a tough battle. I was serving really well. I think without the serve today, I don’t think [it would’ve] been two sets.”
